Another HOT weekend of good vibes, beats and wave sliding. Kuni and I packed up the Commodore and head off up to the Sunshine Coast for the Golden Days Festival and Green Day Out in Coolum Beach.
Mark Pico put on another electric music and once again the weather weekend gods turned on the sun for it.
Byron Surf Festival 2011
The sky opened her arms to welcome the first ever Byron Bay Surf Festival this weekend, two and a half days of full paced fun showcasing the best of old and new Aussie surf culture.
Kicking off on Friday night at the Stone & Wood brewery, Bob McTavish officially opened the festival with a historical slide show and comical yarn about Byron’s early days followed by a brief talk about shaping and his tools of the trade.
The Alaia, an ancient wavecraft which the native Hawaiians used for surfing, has been enjoying a resurgence in modern day surfing. Being that it is one of the earliest forms of surfboard, top surfers from all over the world are using it to test their skills to see how they measure up to their predecessors, the ancient Hawaians, who called surfing 'he'enalu' (roughly translated, 'wave sliding'). But what is the story behind the Alaia and when was it first discovered?
