If you've ever been in the water and had the privilege of watching an advanced surfer in action, you may remember it as being a pretty impressive thing to behold.
You know the kind of surfer I'm talking about – irritatingly good, somehow always knowing where the next wave will break and then proceeding to tear it apart as though he foreknew, even before the take-off, exactly how the wave would unfold. It's enough to make you hang your head in shame ...
You know that you're starting to become a 'serious' surfer when you notice the waves in the background of a car advertisement on TV more than you notice the actual car being advertised.
“Never mind the car, that right point looks like it's absolutely going ballistic!” you mutter to yourself under your breath, while your family stares at you as though your cheese has finally slipped off your cracker ...
You probably wouldn't have thought that a sport as free-spirited as surfing would have such a thing as a rule book, right? I mean, rules just seem to be too staid, too restricting to be a part of the lifestyle which we know and love ... right?

Watching someone grab their rail and slide through a backside tube can be really fun to watch. Admittedly, even watching failed attempts at pigdogging (grabbing a rail and riding the tube backside) can have great entertainment value – who needs a TV, right?

Today, airs seem to be a dime a dozen. Every new school wannabe who is worth their salt knows how to boost – it's the done thing. Now we've got, not only straight up airs, but a multitude of aerial variations too: Frontside and backside airs, air grabs, varials, reverses, full rotation 360s, alley-oops, sushi rolls, rodeos and the list goes on. Nowadays, the floater may be considered quite an old school move to pull out of the bag, but they still look and feel great (especially in bigger waves), not to mention that they can also help you to make sections on a wave where before you may have opted to just kick out.

If you're a beginner and you really want to squeeze the most enjoyment out of your surfing experience, you need to pick the board with the right amount of volume for your skill level. Volume simply refers to the amount of foam that is floating you. It's not rocket science, the longer, thicker and wider your surfboard is, the more volume it has and the more buoyant it will be.
