    There are a surprisingly large number of hostels for such a comparatively remote and small chain of islands. Sometimes going under the name of 'bunkhouses', the hostels range from basic and functional to 5 star comfort. The prices vary too but all offer a budget conscious option for curling up in bed after a hard day's surfing.

    Proximity to the surf varies from hostel to hostel and in all cases you will need your own transport to get about.

    When it comes to ticking all the boxes for an ideal surf destination the Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles as they are invariably known to locals, have to feature quite highly; strong consistent swell, quality breaks and empty line-ups. The only thing missing is water temperatures warm enough for boardies or bikinis and even then the ocean is not as cold as might be expected, affected as it is here by the Gulf Stream.

    Getting There

    You have two options for getting to the Western Isles – ferry or plane – and a choice of departure and arrival points. Surprisingly, flying can often work out much cheaper than the ferry but which you choose will be dependant on several factors. No matter how you get to the islands the choice is always going to be dominated by the absolute necessity of having your own transport once you arrive and your personal budget.
