General Information
Level:0-10 Season:April 1 — September 30 -
Huntington Beach is a popular tourist destination, and has been known for decades for its excellent surf. This spot offers something for everyone, whether they are outright beginners or have years of experience.
-
Beach
-
The beach is long and sandy, and you're looking for the spot opposite 17th Street. There are few surfers here during the week or in the winter months, but it gets crowded at weekends and during the summer holiday season. Air temperatures drop to a low of about 12° in winter and reaching a high of about 22° in summer, so pack your kit accordingly.
-
Wind&Waves
-
Conditions are best here when the wind is coming from the east or the north-east, and the swell is rolling in from the north-west, west, south-west or south. You need to be here at the mid tide position, when the swell will start working at about 1 m and hold up to 4 m or so on a good day. It breaks both right and left on a sandbar, and the waves are fun but probably a bit more powerful than you'd expect. Length is usually a bit disappointing will get more than about 50 m unless you catch it on a good day when it can be between 100 m and 150 m.
-
Facilities
-
Lifeguards patrol the beach, and there are plenty of places to get food and drink. There are some surf shops nearby, and for everything else you just need to head into the town which is only a few minutes walk from the beach.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the current, it can easily take you a mile down the beach without you noticing. There aren't any other hazards to worry about though.
