General Information

Level:5-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This spot has the classic Hawaiian waves that everybody dreams about. It is fantastic to look at and even better to ride, but you had better know what you are doing before you get on it.

Beach

The beach here is sandy, and you will be able to park up right by it and practically fall into the ocean. It doesn't seem to get crowded at all, and you will be able to surf here as much as you like without having to worry about waiting for a gap in the line-up.  Wear shorts, there is no need for a wetsuit as both the air on the water temperature drops below 25c even in the middle of winter.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

A good wind direction here is when it comes from the North, East, or north-east while the swell is best when coming from the south-west, South, or south-east. The best tide position is mid tide, and it works on both rising and falling tides when the swell will start working at about 1 m and hold up to about 3 m on a good day. The wave height isn't the important thing about this spot though, as you'll find that they roll in fast and are hollow and powerful too on this reef break.  Length isn't bad here, on most days it will be anything between 100mres on 150 m and this rarely varies.

Facilities

There are no facilities on the beach here, but the town of Poipu (which translates as ‘Crashing Waves’, incidentally) is right by the spot and here you'll find a number of high-end hotels, a shopping centre and plenty of places to eat and drink.

Safety

Be careful of the rocks on the reef, and try not to step on any urchins as you walk into the water. There are also some strong currents round here, and occasional shark sightings.
