General Information

Level:0-10 Season:June 1 — November 1

The spot is a consistent break good for all levels of experience and is popular in late summer and fall when the hurricane swells roll in.

Beach

A sandy beach by a rock breakwater, this isn’t a big area. Take route 72 either north or south, depending on where you are starting from, and turn off at Cedar Avenue. Drive as far as you can towards the beach then park up. The beach is less than two minutes walk away.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind is considered good when it is coming from the west, southwest or east, and the swell is best when coming from the west, southwest, south, southeast or east. The waves start working at less than 1m and hold up to just over 2m. It is good at all tide positions, and also works on both rising and falling tides. A breakwater, it breaks to both the left and the right and while the waves aren’t very powerful they can give barrels on a normal day or big, hollow waves on a good hurricane day. It is quiet during the week and gets crowded on a good summer weekend.

Facilities

Allendale doesn’t really have a reputation as a beach town, but it has a good infrastructure including good road and rail links, and a wide variety of attractions to keep people interested when they aren’t surfing.

Safety

Be careful of the currents, but they aren’t too bad. The rocks by the breakwater and the submerged ones to the south are the biggest hazard, but stay in the middle and you’ll be fine.
