General Information
Level:3-10 Season:September 1 — April 30 -
Located in Runaway Bay, this spot takes advantage of the water and winds being funnelled down the Broadwater, between the bay and South Stadbroke Island. It’s a kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, suitable for intermediate and better only.
-
Beach
-
The beach is nice and sandy, but it is only small. Fortunately it doesn’t get crowded, despite being right next to the town, and you should have room to set up rigging in peace. The water temperatures are about 20C in winter and 28 C in summer, with the air a few degrees warmer.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This spot works all year except for May – August, when the winds just don’t work for the place. The best wind directions are found when it comes from the north, southeast or south, and can give between 10 and 20 knots quite consistently - they usually pick up in the afternoons, as they are thermal winds. The water is very clean, crystal clear, and is either flat or choppy depending on how hard the wind is blowing.
-
Facilities
-
Parking is on the street right next to the beach, so its easy enough. Runaway Bay is a good size and has a few options when it comes to accommodation, restaurants and bars, and there is a good sized shopping centre here where you can pick up most things you might need.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the trees and the road when launching a kite, there isn’t very much room. That’s all you need to think about, its otherwise a pretty safe location.
