General Information

Southern Florida is something of a conundrum. Unpredictable wind and wave conditions make all water sports very frustrating; yet a large amount of surfers, wind surfers, kite surfers and catamaran owners flock here more than Southern California! Why? Well, you can certainly say that you’re never bored in Southern Florida. The place is ripe with partying, shopping, and other ‘leisure’ activities. So if you’re thwarted once again by another flat day, there is plenty to do on land.

Beaches

South Florida, surrounded by water on three sides, offers miles and miles of beaches to the sun and water enthusiasts. Some of them, such as Miami Beach on the Florida Gold Coast have become icons synonymous with American beach culture. For the surfers and sailors, the fun usually doesn’t start until September, when hurricane season rolls in and the area from Hutchinson Island to Palm Beach can get the largest surf along the east coast.

Weather

What delineates Southern Florida from the central region is its close vicinity to the Gulf Stream, which releases the warm tropical temperatures. Water temperatures barely dip below 70°F (21°C). The summer season contains the flattest and hottest months. Winter and spring months bring in deep northwesterly swells, but can be very erratic and at times volatile. It might be also applicable to wear a light wetsuit as the water temperature does drop slightly.

Infrastructure

Because Southern Florida is one of the most populated areas for water sports, there are many shops and schools available. Hotel accommodations ranging from high-end resorts to cheap motels are plentiful. Be warned: many of the beaches are closely guarded by Florida residents, who are less than inviting to those impeding on their turf.

Safety

There are more reports about shark attacks in Southern Florida than anywhere else in the world. This is due to the large schools of fish that pass through the area. Though sharks are around all year, they’re less in number during the fall.
