General Information

Level:0-10 Season:May 1 — October 1

This spot is suitable for all surfers, but can be fickle – on a sunny day it can be great, in rain it can be horrendous.

Beach

This is a fairly long clean, white sand beach with a number of jetties off it. Access is all public, though there is a fee to pay, and it is easy to get to – just drive into Avon, if you aren’t there already, via Ocean Avenue and find yourself a spot to the north of the Shark River inlet. If you do drive rather than walk out of the city, prepare for a bit of a drive around to try and find a parking spot, especially on a good weekend.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The best wind direction at this spot is when it is out of the southeast or the east. The swell should be coming from the north, northwest or west, and when it does the waves will start building up to 2.5m – 3m. It only really works on a falling tide, and a low tide position is best for it. A beach break, it breaks both left and right and although the waves are pretty much powerless they can still be a good ride. A typical day will give a length of up to 150m, while a good day will see 200m - 300m. It’s a crowded spot at the best of times, and gets packed out at summer weekends, so if you intend coming here then make sure you get here early.

Facilities

Avon has plenty to offer visitors, including a good choice of bed & breakfasts for those wanting to stay here. There are a fair few attractions and it has a relaxing atmosphere.

Safety

There are some strong currents here and they can push you onto the rocks if you aren’t careful. Avoid hitting the jetties too.
