General Information

Level:5-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

Honolulu has its fair share of surf spots, and this is yet another of them. It is for experienced surfers only, and although it isn't the best in the area it is probably one of the quietest and least crowded.

Beach

There isn't actually a beach here, so you'll have to park at the Ala Moana parking lot, then walk for 5 or 10 minutes to the end of Magic Island and paddle out to the spot from the lagoon there.  As there are better spots in the area that can be accessed with less effort, you will find this place is pretty quiet and will be almost deserted during the week and only a few surfers out at weekends.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The swell here is good when coming from the south-west or the south, and it works only at high tide - at low tide it is far too shallow to clear the rocky reef safely. The waves start working here at about 1 m to 1.5 m and will usually hold up to just over 3 m. It is a reef break, only to the left, and the waves are fast and fun but not particularly powerful. Length here is usually quite short, especially compared to the rest of Hawaii, and normally reaches only about 50 m, although on a good day you can see between 100 m and 150 m.

Facilities

This is another spot that is really close to Honolulu centre, and as it is a major tourist destination it has everything you'll need. You'll find surf shops nearby, accommodation, entertainment and plenty of nightlife for when you aren't surfing.

Safety

Be mindful of the rocks on the sharp coral here, especially if you go out at anything other than high tide when clearance over the reef is limited. Other than that the seabed is littered with urchins, and you don't want to stand on any of these.
