General Information
Level:10-10 Season:April 1 — October 1 -
Baltrum is a great spot for kitesurfers and windsurfers of all abilities. The season is from April to October although off season riding is possible with a drysuit.
-
Beach
-
The beach is large with fine white sand and ample space to launch and land a kite. Access is by ferry and then a bus ride takes you to the harbour with the beach being just a short stroll away. Baltrum is very popular with tourists and the summer months get very crowded.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The frontal winds are predominantly coming from western directions and can range from 2-9 B ft. About half of the days during April to October are sailable with wind forces anywhere between 2-5 B ft. The best winds are to be had in fall or spring with lighter winds during the summer. The best wind direction is west to north west. The water tends to be cloudy and can vary between flat or choppy, depending on the tide. The water from November to March can be extremely cold but is warmer from April to October, reaching up to 20o C. Waves range in size from 1 metre to 3 metres. Sitting off the island's north east coast is a sand reef of about 400-500 m which makes kiting very safe since the water is only around 1-5 metres deep during the three hours before and after low tide.
