General Information

Level:4-10 Season:April 1 — October 15

Bettystown is something of a secret amongst the surfing fraternity, and is practically devoid of all tourism. For the most part, the waves are reasonably staid, but there is a superb cove past the headland and boathouse. This has some incredible barreling wave formations which although small, can be almost endlessly entertaining.

Beach

The secluded nature of the cove means you are unlikely to find many people there. Rock formations creating the cove can also be a source of danger however, so it’s worth noting. These rocky formations are to the left of the beach.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

Really, past this natural secret created by geography, which creates some amazing wave formations, there’s little of a spectacular nature about the rest of Bettystown. Ideally, you’ll be coming to this area at the very start and end of the season to maximize the wave power. There are better served spots in the area if kite surfing and windsurfing are your thing, and it’s not particularly well suited to any kind of sailing.

Facilities

Bettystown is not significantly far from Dublin, and can be easily accessed from the Capital. If you are looking for something closer, the town of Drogheda is the closet and most accepting of tourism. It has plenty of reasonably priced accommodation and nightlife if you want to enjoy time off the sea.

Safety

Stay away from the rocky reef to the left of the beach, as this is dangerous, especially given the unpredictable and powerful nature of the spot.
