General Information

Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This spot offers a very consistent break, probably the most consistent in the area, and is a popular spot for surfers.  It is suitable for all abilities and has a decent atmosphere.

Beach

The beach is a mixture of sand and large rocks.  It is crowded at the best of times, there are always people here, and at weekends or holidays there won’t be any spare sand.  Water temperatures can reach as high as 22C by February, and fall back to around 14 C by august.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

This spot is best when the wind blows from the northeast or west or southwest and the swell is rolling in from the south or southwest.  It will start working at less than 2m and reaches a maximum of 3m, and does so at all tide positions and on both rising and falling tides.  The swell breaks both left and right over a reef, and the waves are slower and carry less power than some other spots nearby, so it is really just a fun place that won’t challenge anybody too much.  Length is average for the area, being up to 150m on most days.

Facilities

Nuhaka is the nearest place, and it’s very small although there is a fish & chip shop and a general store.  Most visitors here will come down from Gisborne for the day however, and that is a fairly large place that is useful as a base to explore the coast.  There are no facilities on this beach at all, so you will need to plan your trip properly.

Safety

There are no hazards here other than the other surfers when it is really crowded.  There still isn’t any hassle or localism though, so just play nicely and you’ll be fine.
