General Information
Level:2-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
This break is just by Moturiki Island, which is a small rocky area that sticks out from the beach and seems to cause some interesting conditions as it catches the swells. When it goes off you can get some very big waves, although they aren't particularly difficult and will suit everybody apart from outright beginners.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is an area of long golden sand but you'll have to paddle out from it towards the island to find the break. This end of the beach is generally quiet unless you come here on a summer weekend when you might find this part can get quite crowded. Temperatures here average around 21° in summer, and about 12° in winter, so pack your kit accordingly.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This place really goes off when everything comes together. For it to do so, you need the wind from the west, south-west or south and the swell from the north or north-east. You have to be here at mid tide, and if all happens you will find the waves starts working at 1 m to 1.5 m and will hold up to 4 or 5 m. It is a point break, only to the right, and despite the size the waves are much less powerful and slower than you would expect.
-
Facilities
-
The town of Mount Maunganui is just behind the beach and has a fair bit of choice when it comes to restaurants, hotels, cafes and shops. It's a pleasant place to spend a bit of time if you aren't out surfing.
-
Safety
-
Be careful of the rocks here, there are plenty about and you can easily misjudge it and hit one. Apart from that the current is quite strong as it swirls round the island, so just use your head.
