General Information
Level:5-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
One for experienced surfers only, this is found at the south end of the picturesque Waihi Beach. It only works once in a while and it's hard to predict, but if you are here when it goes it is worth spending a day on it.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is pretty big, all golden sand and very clean, but the only problem is that you will have to paddle out for a couple of hundred metres through the break to get to the spot. This is quiet from 9-to-5, but might have a dozen surfers out in the evenings or at weekends.
-
Wind&Waves
-
You need to catch this place on a rising tide and at either the low or mid tide positions. It will start working at 1 m and hold up to about 2.5 m when the wind is coming from the north-west, west or south-west and the swell is coming from the north, east or north-east. It breaks to the right over a sandbar and the waves are hollow and fast. Length of the wave is about average and should be between 100 and 150 m all the time.
-
Facilities
-
This is a popular holiday destination and because of this it is well set up to deal with tourists and visitors. There is a campsite by the headland, and whether you are staying here or not you can park up and head down to the beach. There are beach patrols around between Labour Weekend and Easter.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the currents they are very strong if the tide is falling and you will be dragged out to sea. That's the only hazard to watch out for though.
