Bozo Beach / Cabarete / Dominican Republic

The name might imply that this spot is full of people who don’t know one end of a board from the other, but it’s really no worse than anywhere else.  It is a nice relaxing spot in a beautiful area, and is suitable for all abilities of surfer, windsurfer and kitesurfer.

The beach is nice, set in a big bay with plenty of soft sand and lots of room.  It can get busy but not crowded, and kiters and windsurfers are kept in different areas – upwind for windsurfing, downwind for kitesurfing.  The water temperature is about 28C, so no wetsuits are required here, even in winter.

The best months for the wind are from June to August, with it blowing mainly from the east.  In the mornings it reaches about 15 knots, while the afternoons will give up to 30 knots.  Outside these months, the wind is lighter but the waves are better.  The water surface is choppy inside the bay and has small waves outside it, with the swells reaching about 1.5m at most.

This area is really well set up to cater for water sports enthusiasts.  There is a school hire and a shop where you can buy or rent gear, and there is plenty of accommodation on offer close by.  There are also showers and public toilets, and plenty of places nearby where you can buy food and drink.

Watch out for the trees on the beach when launching a kite, and steer clear of the swimmers and their reserved areas.
