General Information
Level:0-10 Season:October 1 — March 31 -
Scarborough is a Perth suburb long known for its large population of English expatriates, not to mention its warm climate. The beach is one of Perths’ most popular, and attracts windsurfers, kitesurfers and surfers of all abilities.
-
Beach
-
This is a huge beach, very long and consisting of soft white sand with dunes behind it. The size means it never gets crowded, and if you come here in summer you can expect the water temperature to be around 20° C.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This west facing beach catches the thermal winds from October through to March, so it's a decent season. The winds pick up almost every day, coming from the south-west and drawing at speeds of between 12 and 25 knots. The water is crystal clear and unaffected by any tide. The water is flat for about the first 70 or 80 m away from the shore, and then some small waves will appear which will gradually increase in size to 2 or 3 m high as you get out further. For surfers, it is a beach break and they can expect a length of up to about 100 m or so.
-
Facilities
-
Facilities here are excellent, it's just a shame that not all the nearby spots follow suit. Shops here sell and hire gear, and there are rescue patrols around in case of difficulty. Showers are on the beach with toilets nearby, and plenty of food outlets for when you are done surfing. You can park in a large lot behind the beach, or take one of the many busses.
-
Safety
-
Beginners must be supervised or having lessons to be allowed on here. It's really quite a safe beach though, just keep an eye out for swimmers and other users.
