General Information

Level:8-10 Season:April 1 — November 1

Sylt is the largest and most northerly of Germany's North Sea Islands and is joined to the mainland by the Hindenburg Causeway. It is regarded by many as one of the places to go and be seen and has plenty to offer everyone. Buhne Kampen is situated on the north west coast of Sylt and enjoys fairly constant surf but challenging conditions make it only suitable for intermediate to experienced surfers. The season runs from April to November.

Beach

Buhne Kampen offers a 35 km long stretch of perfect white sand and is used as a nudist beach. It is an exposed beach that gets lots of strong winds. You can get here by driving through Kampen with the water close to the road on your right hand side, You should come to two car parks on the left hand side and you can use either. There is a charge. It is then quite a long walk through the dunes to the beach. There are not normally many people around.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

It is windy here pretty much all of the time, with the best winds from Fall to Spring. Summer winds are much lighter. Most of the time the winds are westerlies but the best direction is east. Windswells are much more common than groundswells and waves coming from the west are the best. The beach break throws up both left and right hand waves. It can be quite difficult to exit the water with onshore winds due to the shore break. The spot varies from small choppy waves to high 3-4 meter waves with very strong winds. There are lines of rock about 20 meters into the sea which occur about every 100 to 200 meters from Westerland to Kampen, so you need to look out for these. You can't see them with a high tide, but there is a sign on the beach. You can also hit a current when the wind is coming from south or north.

Facilities

There are toilets, showers, food and parking here and Kampen itself has a lot to offer most times of the year, including a Jazz Festival and a Festival of Music in the Summer. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and places to stay.

Safety

Watch out for the rock line and wind breaks and also be aware of the current in south or north winds.
