General Information
Level:10-10 Season:April 1 — October 1 -
This is a vast sandy bay that curves all the way to Findhorn. On a good day with a westerly wind prevailing onshore, kitesurfing conditions are excellent.
-
Beach
-
The bay has fine white sand and dunes planted with pine trees. It can be accessed by foot, via a lane that leads from the car park next to the Burghead Sands Holiday park or alternatively follow signs to the harbour and park up by the beach. Scattered rocks on the beach can be a problem but as long as the kitesurfer stays a couple of hundred yards out to sea, he should manage to avoid them.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The sea is very shallow for a long way out and so it can be a bit of a hike if you have large fins on your board. On the plus side, the shallow waters make it a great place for beginners. Strong northerly winds can make the sea very choppy which can seem rather daunting but allows the experienced surfer to steer themselves in an easterly direction for as far as they like. The beach has a tendency to remain wet at low tide, but you should be able to launch from any spot opposite the main ramp leading down to the beach.
-
Facilities
-
There is a harbour toilet, a general store and very little else.
-
Safety
-
Burghead beach is situated in an easterly position and a strong north westerly can propel the beginner back to the beach or even into the harbour wall.
