General Information
Level:7-9 Season:March 31 — November 30 -
The Canadian Hole is by far one of the most popular places to wind surf on the east coast. This lagoon area – aptly named after the throngs of Canadians who flock here – is part of the Pamlico Sound situated between Buxton and Avon. If you’re a wind surfer who is ready for some of the best rides of your life, you’re going to want to come here.
-
Beach
-
Now, unlike Vermont Hole, which only concerns the sound side of the Outer Banks, Canadian Hole extends to both the sound and ocean side. The stretch of land between these two sides is only 300 yards long, so wind surfers can enjoy hopping between the two extremes.
-
Wind&Waves
-
On the south side, waves are generally flat and choppy, usually never getting much bigger than 1 to 3 meters. It’s also nice and shallow throughout, and wind surfers can sail downwind on a southwest wind or upwind on a northwest wind. The northwest sailing works best between the months of March and November. The ocean side gives advanced surfers a fun challenge, as waves can easily reach 6 meters high. Average wind speed all year is around 9 knots.
-
Facilities
-
Access the Canadian Hole from Route 12 and then park on the sound side The best thing to do is to stay in either Avon and Buxton, where you can easily rent a beach house with a couple of buddies for much cheaper than staying at a hotel. There are wind surfing shops and schools aplenty in both towns, so take advantage of these services to improve your skills at this amazing sport.
-
Safety
-
Power lines are located close to the beach area of the sound, so launch south of the windsurfing area to avoid being entangled.
