General Information

Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This very remote spot is right up in the north-west corner of the island, looking out on the Tasman Sea. It is suitable for all levels of experience and as for the atmosphere, well, as it's likely that there will only be you out there it's exactly what you make it.

Beach

There isn't much of a beach at this point, just a small sandy area at the end of a rocky peninsula.  You need to carry your gear for about 5 to 10 minutes from the parking the end of Cape Reinga Road, but on the plus side it's very quiet here. If you think it's eerie, it could be something to do with the fact that traditionally this is the place where Maori spirits leave the island.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The swell here is good when coming from the north-west or the west, and it doesn't matter whether the tide is rising or falling and what position it is at. The waves will start working at about 1 m or so before holding up to a maximum of about 2.5 m, maybe a little more on a good day. It breaks both right and left over a reef, and the waves are fairly powerful but generally fun to ride. Length is typically short here, and is usually around 50 m or so, but on a good day might get over 100 m.

Facilities

There is absolutely nothing out here. It is as remote as you can get and you will need to bring everything you want with you.

Safety

Watch out for the currents here as the water swirls around the point, and take care not to catch yourself on the rocks that make up the reef.
