General Information

Level:0-10 Season:May 1 — October 31

It isn’t a big wave here, but then you’re in Alaska and have to what you get and be grateful for it.  Actually, it’s not a bad spot and it provides a decent break, right by the city, and it’s suitable for all experience levels.

Beach

The beach is sandy but has rocky outcrops nearby, though it’s not like you have any need to go close to them given the lack of crowds here.  It’s almost certain you’ll be the only person out.  October tends to be the best month but summer is ok too, anytime after this will be far too cold even wearing a thick drysuit.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind works here when it comes from the north, northwest or northeast, while the swell relies on the Aleutian waves folding themselves into the bay from the northeast.  It works at all tide positions, and will start at about 1m before ultimately reaching a decent 2.5m or so.  It’s a beach break, right and left directions, and while the waves aren’t anything special they hold just enough power and speed to make it worthwhile and interesting.  Length is only short though, so don’t expect anything over about 50m.

Facilities

This is Alaska, not Hawaii, and you are going to be disappointed if you expect any facilities for surfers round here.  You can park by the beach, and be happy you can.

Safety

This really is a very safe place to surf, there are just no hazards at all as long as you dress for the cold.
