General Information

Level:0-10 Season:June 1 — March 1

This is on the opposite side of the Cape Cod arm to Wellfleet, and offers surfing suitable for all experience levels.

Beach

The beach is sandy and long, curving right round the outer edge of the arm. You need to head for Doane Rock, leave your car at the parking lot and take the trolley down to the beach.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

A good wind direction here is west or southwest, and the best swell direction is southeast or east. The swell starts working at 1m or 1.5m and holds up to 3m or more, especially on a storm swell. Another beach break, both right and left, the waves are relatively big but don’t hold a huge amount of power. They’ll typically be about 100m – 150m long, but on a good day they can be up to 300m. Catching it on a falling tide is your best bet, when the level is at low or mid tide. Beginners need to be wary on the bigger days when the waves can be steep and also give overhead barrels, but this tends to happen in the fall and if you come earlier in the season it will be easier to manage.

Facilities

Wellfleet is just on the other side of the land and it is a popular tourist destination, especially in summer. There are a couple of campsites and a few hotels and motels, and there are plenty of places to eat – the local specialty is seafood, and most restaurants will base their menu on it.

Safety

Rips in the area need to be given respect. There are also occasional shark sightings, though generally there isn’t a problem – just be sensible.
