General Information

Level:6-9 Season:March 1 — May 31

Cocoa Beach first received its fame in the 1960s as the prime spot for east coast surfing, as made popular by greats like Gary Topper, Mimi Munro, and recently Kelly Hall. Nowadays, the once amazing surfing conditions have since diminished due to ecological and manmade developments. Though local surfers try to stake a claim here, it is the catamaran sailors, wind surfers, and kite surfers that have taken over the territory, as the lower waves make for some nice sailing options.

Beach

Cocoa Beach is a wide expanse whose bottom consists of pristine white sand, which sailors share with the swimmers of the area. These sandy beaches make for easy launching for wind and kite surfers.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

When the south swell is on, it rages through the water, and waves can reach up to 8 ft , but for the most part, it doesn’t get much higher than 4 ft . Best wind directions come the north and southeast in the spring March to May). In the winter (December to February) and fall (September to November) months, wind speed increases to 8 to 15 mph . As water temperatures can dip below 40 F between March and December, it is advised to wear a wetsuit.

Facilities

Cocoa Beach can be found along A1A, where you’ll instantly be bombarded with the sight of huge block hotels bordering the beach line. Restaurants are not in short supply either – there are several Mexican places that are the talk of the town. If you’re looking to have a little fun – be it a bar scene or more something a little more ‘exotic’, Cocoa Beach is a great place to have a night on the town.

Safety

Wind and kite surfers are required to sail at least 200 ft from the city beach line. Fishing is extensive here, so watch out for the nets.
