General Information

This sea spot at Coma -Ruga is situated about 30 minutes north east of the city of Tarragona and around 1 hour south of Barcelona. This is a very popular spot with surfers, kite surfers and wind surfers of all levels and abilities. During the summer, particularly, June, July and August it does get packed with tourists and beach goers. Because of this there are defined zones marked out by yellow buoys. There are also time restrictions telling you when you can and cannot surf. It is a good idea to check it out before you set off. There are some nice thermal breezes to be had in the summer, so the best times to go are from April through to September.

The beach here is medium to large in size depending upon whether the tide is in or out. It does get packed during the summer so make sure you enter the water in the boat zone (marked out by buoys) To get here you drive eastbound out of Tarragona until you see signs for Coma-Ruga, here you will also see signs for the beach. There is plenty of parking nearby.

The best direction to surf here is when the wind is in an easterly direction. This is also the predominant direction. The wind has a tendency to swing west southwest and east northeast at regular intervals and these will be sideshore. There are some really good thermal breezes during the summer months, and in general the hotter the weather the better the thermal. The water quality is clean and there are small waves most, if not all of the time. The water temperature falls somewhere between 13-18 degrees depending upon the time of year, so you might want to suit up, or down accordingly.

Parking

There is accommodation and eating places close by as well as ample parking. Coma -Ruga itself has a few shops, bars and restaurants. If you fancy a bit of nightlife, then head towards Tarragona.

Safety

There isn't really too much to worry about here, except to make sure that you adhere to the correct surfing zones. Also be on the lookout for the odd stray bather or swimmer during the summertime.
