The Kingdom of Belgium, one of the founding members of the European Union, is a country in northwest Europe that shares borders with four neighbors: Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and Germany. Belgium's culture is largely a composite of both Germanic and Latin Europe, and for a long time has attracted tourists from all over the globe. The rather cold weather persists throughout all the seasons here, resulting in only a handful of really popular watersport activities. For those die-hard enthusiasts that can ignore the icy sting of the water, there are a great many sophisticated water sporting facilities and clubs to be found offering sailing and boating, windsurfing and kite boarding.

Terrain
-
To the northwest, and bordering on the North Sea, coastal plains rippled with sand dunes gently rise up to meet a central plateau that is irrigated by a complex network of rivers, streams and lakes. To the southeast, jagged and rocky Mountains with heavily forested slopes, hills and valleys dominate the terrain. Access to the North Sea, as well as numerous lakes and rivers scattered across the central plateau, provide many opportunities for watersports.

Climate
-
Belgium has a marine-controlled temperate climate with cool conditions and heavy rainfall all year round. Temperatures can plummet to just above zero during mid-winter (January) and hover in the late teens during the summer, even in the warmest month of July.

Safety
-
There are comprehensive safety policies for all the major beaches in the northwestern coastal regions. It is advised that all people entering the water for a greater length of time wear wetsuits to ward off the cold. For those taking boats or yachts out on the water, it is advised that they be wary of strong currents and rough seas in the North Sea.
