Being a country twice the size of Spain, Egypt has a good deal of land mass. However, due to arid conditions across much of the country, 99 percent of the population uses only 5.5 percent of the land area. With such a concentration around the sources of water, you might have thought that leisure activities would take second place to more pragmatic concerns. However, given the coastal regions of Egypt and the relative safety of the Red Sea, this isn’t the case.
-
Terrain
-
Vast swathes of land are covered by arid, unpopulated desert. For any watersporting holiday however, the Red Sea is an incredible resource, having both reasonable and warm winds and a variation of sailing-friendly conditions. The two most popular uses for the Red Sea coast are Kite Surfing and wind surfing, both of which are increasing in popularity.
-
Climate
-
The only real rainfall to hit Egypt comes in the winter months, making it a safe place for any fair weather sailing fanatics. The average temperature ranges between 13 degrees Celsius in winter and anywhere up to 43 degrees in the summer. The hottest temperatures are found on the Red Sea coast. A regular and relatively unchanging northwesterly wind helps to cool the areas near the Mediterranean.
-
Safety
-
The Red Sea has many clearly marked danger zones which are deemed unsuitable for sailing for the most part. Reefs and rock formations are commonplace closer to land, and while you will be clearly warned by traditional methods, falling asleep at the wheel isn’t recommended. Other considerations include raging hot sun and piracy in the Red Sea.
