The Italian Republic is a country partly located on the European continent, and partly on the Italian Peninsula in southern Europe. Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the national economy and features several international top-tourist destination cities. Given that the Italian Peninsula is entirely ocean bound as well as the existence of several large lakes in the north, watersports have become very popular here. Boating on the Mediterranean is a favorite pastime and motorboats, canoes and kayaks can be hired at many coastal and lake resorts.

The country comprises the long boot-shaped Italian peninsula and a number of islands in the Mediterranean, including the two largest: Sicily and Sardinia. There exists about 7600 km worth of coastline on the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. The Apennine Mountains form the backbone of the Italian peninsula and the Alps - its boundary in the north. The Po, Italy’s longest river, flows from the Alps on the western border with France and crosses the Padan plain en route to the Adriatic Sea. Italy is situated at the meeting point between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, resulting in it being subject to considerable seismic and volcanic activity. There are fourteen volcanoes scattered across subduction zones in Italy, three of which are active, including Mount Etna and Mount Vesuvius.

Climate

Overall, Italy has a temperate seasonal climate but great variations are to be found between the inland northern regions and the southern Peninsula. The interior high ground has a humid continental climate, although winters get cold, wet and snowy, whereas the coastal areas and much of the peninsula south of Florence enjoy a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, dry summers. Lowland valleys in the north can be quite hot in the summer.

The main beaches, harbors and lakes are closely watched by coast and lifeguards, all of which are certified in water rescue and first aid. All official watersports competitions and events are monitored by trained officials and have medics on standby. A recent development in water safety includes the introduction of 300 dogs that have been trained to rescue floundering swimmers across the beaches and lakes of Italy.
