Located on the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, The Portuguese Republic is the westernmost country in southwestern Europe. Portugal, which includes two island clusters, the Azores and Madeira, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east.

Terrain

The Portuguese mainland is dissected by its main river, the Tagus. This waterway separates the more mountainous northern landscape, which is characterized by plateaus and carved-in river valleys, and the gently rolling plains of the south, which include the Algarve and the Alentejo.

Climate
-
The climate in Portugal varies between the northern and southern territories, but is also considerably influenced by topographical features and proximity to the ocean. Winters are colder inland and nearer to Spain, although mild compared with the rest of Europe. Light snowfalls can occur, but this is mostly restricted to the Serra da Estrela Mountains. Inland, the summers are hot and dry whereas, at the coast, temperatures remain milder year round. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, which transports warm equatorial waters northwards from the mid-Atlantic, ocean temperatures around the coast are very pleasant for most of the year, thus making Portuguese beaches perfect for swimming and watersports.

In addition to numerous life and coast guards at most beaches and resorts, the authorities make use of the famous Portuguese water dogs to aid in protecting the beaches. These animals are naturally strong swimmers and have been specially trained to dive and rescue struggling swimmers.
