General Information
Level:0-10 Season:October 1 — April 1 -
Right at the entrance to Kahului Bay, this is a place for surfers, windsurfers and kiters. To put it bluntly, it is just a fantastic location for all watersports.
-
Beach
-
The beach is sandy and not a bad size. There are often quite a few people on it, and it can get crowded, at least by Hawaiian standards, although that is still nothing compared to the swarms that descend on the beaches of, say, Long Island. It is an all year round spot and temperatures stay in the mid to high twenties, and as the water is warm too shorts will do.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This area probably has the best exposure to the easterly trade winds in the whole of Maui, but launching kites can be difficult as much of the beach is in a wind shadow. Once you are out, the winds are a good 20 -25 knots and work all year round, although the speed can drop away a little in winter and spring. The water is choppy, and when the winds are swirling a bit you can get small waves up to about 1m high. Riders need to be able to stay upwind, surfers will a great right hander on the outside that gives a good long ride.
-
Facilities
-
There is parking here and a few shops across the road, but apart from that facilities are limited. It means the beach and shore are unspoiled though, so who’s going to complain? Anyway, the centre of the city is only a short walk away
-
Safety
-
Watch out for other traffic, and windsurfers and kitesurfers need to be able to stay upwind unless they intend to ride right across the bay.
