General Information
Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
Dahme is situated on the Baltic Sea coast of North East Germany, pretty close to the island of Fehmarn. This ocean spot is popular with wind surfers, kite surfers and surfers of all abilities and levels. There is no real season here, but it should be avoided in the height of the summer (July and August) due to the number of tourists and beach goers this place attracts. There is excellent parking here right on the beach, but there may well be a parking fee during the summer months.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is long and sandy and is 60 meters wide in some places, so out of season it is possible to pick your spot. However, don’t hold out much hope during the summer. How you find it is pretty simple, Drive northbound on the A1 out of Hamburg or Lubeck and you will eventually see the signs for Dahme. Once in Dahme, follow the signs for the beach where you are able to park.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The dominant wind direction here is north northwest. However it can chop and change pretty rapidly. The wind speed averages a nice 5-6 knots and is frontal, but can be gusty at times, although the winds tend to be lighter in the summer. The water here tends to be choppy most of the time and small to medium waves (up to around 3 meters in height are possible. From the beach the first 30 meters or so are fairly shallow, so this is something you will need to bear in mind. The water temperature is a comfortable 18 degrees most of the summer, but like all venues around this coast, drops dramatically in the winter to around 4-6 degrees.
-
Facilities
-
Apart from excellent parking facilities, there are also toilets close by as well as eating places. Dahme itself offers a small handful of shops and some accommodation, but if you are seeking some serious nightlife, then you will need to head back into Lubeck, or better still Hamburg.
-
Safety
-
There is a bridge/pier here at the far left of the spot which you will need to be aware of. Keep an eye on changing wind direction and strong gusts. Watch out for crowded beaches and swimmers in the height of the summer.
