General Information
Level:5-10 Season:May 1 — September 1 -
This is also known as Demon Break, so it should be obvious that it is for experienced surfers only. For a few days every year it can match any point-break in the world, but mostly it’s just a good spot albeit with difficult conditions.
-
Beach
-
Field 2 at Robert Moses is the location for this beach, it’s down the western end of Fire Island. The beach is sandy and big but usually crowded, and it has a rock jetty at the point where the beach abruptly angles away to the northwest.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind is good here when it comes from the north or northeast, and the swell is good when coming from the south or southeast. Most of the time, the waves start working at about 1m and hold up to 2.5m or so, though the best days can see way in excess of that. At all times, you need to be out here at mid tide position and when the tide is falling to get the best conditions. It’s a point break, only on the left, and the waves are powerful here and sometimes provide excellent barrels at low tide, although they break in very shallow water and it’s easy to get a face full of sand if you aren’t prepared.
-
Facilities
-
There are lifeguards patrolling the beaches in the park, and public toilets too. Concession stands offer food and drink, but you aren’t going to find a surf shop here.
-
Safety
-
There are strong rips here, especially on an outgoing tide, so you’ll need to be able to paddle for a long time. On the other hand, incoming tides push you back towards the rocks so you’ll also need to be able to paddle against them.
