General Information
Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
Dewey Beach can be a nice little spot for all surfers, experienced or not. It is probably a good choice when other nearby beaches are too crowded, and is best in the fall when the hurricane swells come in and make the waves bigger and more consistent.
-
Beach
-
This is a long sandy beach with plenty of room to pick your spot. To find it, just head down Route 1 and keep an eye on the signs for Dewey Beach. If you are here between May and October you will either need a permit or park on the west side of Route 1 and walk a while to the beach, as there are few meters nearby.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind here comes out of the northwest, west or southwest and combines with the swell from the southeast or east to give the best conditions. It will start working at 1m – 1.5m, and will hold up to 2m or so on a rising tide. It is a beach break, right and left, with fairly ordinary waves that are pretty much powerless. Wave length is usually short at 50m or less, but a good day will reach up to 150m. It is a quiet spot, with only a few surfers ever out, even at weekends.
-
Facilities
-
Dewey Beach has it all despite being a small town. Thousands of people descend on it over summer weekends and college vacations, and it has a reputation for being a place to party.
-
Safety
-
Be aware of swimmers, they are everywhere in summer and sometimes hard to avoid. There’s nothing else to worry about here.
