General Information

Level:0-5 Season:January 1 — December 31

Surfer, kitesurfers and windsurfers all enjoy coming out here.  It is a nice little wave suitable for all ability levels, and while it might not present a challenge to anyone except outright beginners it is still a fun place to be.

Beach

The beach is sandy and over two miles long, so you’re going to find room to surf unless it is a big holiday weekend when it might get a little crowded.  It is all public access and has a good atmosphere, friendly and not competitive.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The swell in this area never really gets very big, it will start at less than 1m and only manage to get to about 2.5m at the most.  It is a fairly standard beach break really, breaking both right and left, and comparable to similar spots anywhere else in the world.  The waves themselves aren’t powerful or fast, but they just have enough character to make them fun without being too difficult for beginners or boring for those with experience.  Length isn’t great, usually reaching a maximum of about 50m, but a good day might see it get to about 100m – 150m.

Facilities

Park in the lot at Kalama Beach Park and take a stroll north for about 5 minutes or so to reach the beach.  It is widely considered to be the best beach in Hawaii, and lifeguards patrol here.  The town of Kailua is behind the beach, and is a hugely popular tourist destination that has all the facilities you need from surf shops to accommodation, restaurants and nightlife.

Safety

There is absolutely nothing at all that could be considered a hazard here.  Your granny could surf this spot and feel safe.
