General Information
Level:0-10 Season:May 1 — September 30 -
There are two lagoons here, but the eastern one tends to give better, more consistent conditions for surfers. It is suitable for everybody although it’s exposed location means you need to be careful outside summertime.
-
Beach
-
The season here is really only the summer months, up to September. Beyond that, you’re really tempting nature to throw her worst at you as the winter storms come in and can have a full white out in the lagoon within 5 minutes of seeing the clouds.
-
Wind&Waves
-
A good wind here is when it is blowing from the west or the south, and the swell is good when it comes from the north, northwest, east or northeast. It works on all tide positions so you can head out here any time of day, and the waves will start at about 1m – 1.5m before building up to just over 3m. It breaks to the left on a natural breakwater that separates the lagoon from the sea, and the waves are powerful for their size. Length can be short unless the wind is really blowing, and then you can see up to 150m.
-
Facilities
-
Hillside Boulevard runs right around the lagoon so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it. There are no facilities here though and it’s a 15 minute drive out of town, so try not to forget anything when you head out.
-
Safety
-
Watch the weather if you go out here in September, it can close in fast and you’ll be buried in snow before you know it. Apart from that, it’s actually a pretty safe place to be out
