General Information
Level:0-10 Season:April 30 — September 30 -
You never quite know what you’re going to get here as the sandbanks shift all the time, but if you are in the area it’s definitely worth a look. It’s a spot suitable for all levels of experience and is just a fun place to go out.
-
Beach
-
The beach is at the end of Pine Walk right in the centre of Fair Harbor, but to be fair it stretches for miles either side of this. It’s sandy and clean, and to be honest even if you aren’t surfing it is a good place to just sit and soak up the sun for a while.

Wind&Waves
-
Good wind directions here are from the north, northwest or northeast, and good swells come from the southwest, south or southeast. The swell starts working at a big 2.5m – 3m, and holds up to over 4m on a good day. You need to catch it on a falling tide to get the big waves, and it also needs to be at either mid or low tide. It breaks on a sandbar, both right and left, and the waves are fast and powerful but still fun to ride without being overwhelming. A normal day will give a length of up to 150m, and a good day can have that stretch out to almost 300m. If you come here on a weekday, you won’t see anybody else around and even a summer weekend won’t more than a few surfers out.

Facilities
-
Car access is very, very limited on Fire Island – your nearest parking spot is at the lighthouse and is about 2.5 miles from the beach, so you’re much better coming over by boat. It’s almost exclusively a summer community, so facilities are limited although you do get lifeguards on the beach.
