General Information
Level:2-10 Season:May 1 — August 1 -
As if you can’t guess from the name, this is an island just off the coast of Oahu and it is flat. It has the benefit of catching both the wind and the currents in all directions, and is a popular draw for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers although it's probably a little bit too much for beginners to handle.
-
Beach
-
The island itself doesn't have any beach, so you need to launch or paddle from the mainland and work your way over towards it. The mainland area is sandy but small, making it difficult for kiters to get out here.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The tradewinds that make this place good blow all year round, but they are at their best and most consistent in the summer months from May to August. The best time to come out here is in the early morning around 7 AM, or in the late afternoon after 5 PM when the winds blow strongest and you may see 10 to 15 knots. The water here is shallow and when it is flat it will be the smoothest water on the whole of the island, although if the wind is in the wrong direction it can get choppy. The best time to catch it is a high tide, but you should be wary of getting too close to the island as it never really submerges completely.
-
Facilities
-
On the mainland beach opposite the island, you'll find a few facilities. There are showers and toilets here, as well as a shop and places where food and drink is available.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the shallow rocky reefs around here, especially if you get too close to the island.
