General Information
Level:0-10 Season:April 1 — September 30 -
This is a big wave spot, yet it’s suitable for all experience levels as there are no particular hazards or difficult breaks.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is black sand which looks a bit odd first time you see it but is actually clean and soft underfoot. You can probably be out here all year round, but you’ll need a very thick suit and a tough outlook if you want to play here in winter. Summer is your best bet and it isn’t actually too cold, though you’ll still need a thick wetsuit as it will be about 10-12c.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The swell here can be excellent, easily as big as some of the better known surf spots across the world. The waves start working at about 1m, but will soon build up and will hold up to a magnificent 5m or more. The location isn’t fussy about the tide position either, it works on everything, and on both rising and falling tides. There are actually a few different wave shapes on this reef break, it goes both left and right, and the waves are big but don’t hold too much power or speed. Length isn’t bad, anything up to 150m is possible on an average day and a good day will go out towards 300m.
-
Facilities
-
There’s nothing here. The nearest town is 50 miles to the north and you aren’t going to find hot showers and public bathrooms on the beach.
-
Safety
-
As long as you are equipped for cold, there aren’t really any issues here. Even the big waves don’t present a danger although they’ll be a challenge for the inexperienced.
