Geierswalde See / Saxony / Germany

Geierswalde See is a man made lake spot that is situated in the Saxony region of Germany. It is a very popular spot for sailors, surfers, wind surfers and kite surfers of all levels and abilities. There is no real season here, but be aware that in the summer months they hold jet and water ski competitions along with regattas, so it can get pretty crowded. There is parking here at the campsite; however a small fee may well be charged.

The beach here is made up of soft white sand and is lined with trees at the back of the beach. This is something that kite surfers may need to be aware of. It is medium sized and during the quieter months it is possible for surfers to pick their spot.

The winds here are frontal in nature and tend to come at you from a westerly direction and variations thereof. Having said this, the wind can change direction to southerly and north easterly during the early part of the year when the wind speed picks up to around 13-15 knots. In general the wind speed averages around 7-8 knots and is lighter during the summer months. The water quality is clean and can be flat to choppy, depending upon wind speed and direction. Sometimes it is possible to pick up waves of around 1 meter in height which is good news for surfers. The water temperature here remains around a pleasant 15-18 degrees in the summer but can drop to around 4-5 degrees in the winter, so it is advisable to suit up accordingly.

There is a campsite very near by where you can park. You can also find shower and toilet facilities here along with eating establishments and a small shop for all your supplies. If you prefer a little more nightlife then the nearest large city is Dresden.

There isn’t really too much to worry about here except to watch out for crowds on the beach and swimmers during the summer months and for kite surfers, be mindful of the trees at the back of the beach.
