The beach at Getares is only a stones throw away from the busy port of Algeciras on Spain's southern peninsula. It is a popular spot with kite and wind surfers of all levels and abilities. It does get bust with tourists during June, July and August so there may well be surfing restrictions during this time. You might want to check this out before you set off. The best months to surf here are from June to September when the thermals kick in.

Beach

Getares has a large sandy beach with lots of space for launching your kite. It also has a large grassy area at the back so you can store all your gear if you need to. To get here you simply head south out of Algecieras and look for Getares Playa. Here you can park.

Wind&Waves

The main wind directions here are easterly and westerly. The best direction is east south easterly. However the wind direction is changeable and can change from Levante (E) to Poniente (W) every few days. The wind is pretty strong here and more than 60-70 percent of the days have winds over 10 knots The water quality is clean and the conditions are flat to choppy most of the time. However the strong levante winds can bring in waves of up to 1.5 meters in height. The water temperature remains between 18-26 degrees depending upon the time of year. A shorty or shorts are okay for spring, summer and autumn, but in winter a long suit is probably needed.

Parking

There is not much here apart from parking. For everything else, take the short trip back into Algeciras.

Safety

Getares is a fairly safe spot, just keep a look out for swimmers and bathers in or around the water during the busy summer season.
