General Information
Level:0-10 Season:October 1 — May 1 -
Harbour Island is a popular tourist destination and the American influence can be seen clearly in the New England style buildings. Found on the more sheltered Western side of the island, this is suitable for kitesurfers and windsurfers of all abilities and is the preferred spot when the wind is coming from the west.
-
Beach
-
The beach is a good size, plenty of room to manoeuvre or to set up your rigging. It's made up of a fine pink sand that the island is famous for, and is never crowded despite the island being popular with tourists. It is generally warm here, and the only time you might consider bringing a wetsuit is in February as the water temperature drops to a low of about 21° C.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind is best when it comes out of the south-west, west or north-west and the best time to be here is in the months between October and May, when you can expect four or five days wind every week blowing at around 20 knots and sometimes reaching a maximum of about 30 knots. The water is shallow for miles and miles around, crystal clear, and may well be the biggest area of perfectly flat water you will ever see.
-
Facilities
-
The beach doesn't have any facilities, but Dunmore Town, the only town on the island, is well set up for managing tourists and there are a few places to stay, restaurants, bars etc.
-
Safety
-
There are a few rocks dotted around the shoreline, but they are easy to spot and easy to avoid so nobody has any excuse for getting into trouble here.
