General Information
Level:8-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
Goldkanal is a canal spot situated in the region of Baden Wurttemberg, South West Germany. It is a fairly quiet spot for windsurfers and kite surfers alike. It is not advisable for beginners to surf here because of the tidal undercurrents and the fact that the canal is still used by canal boats, so you do have to be vigilant. It does get busy June July and August, although there is no particular season here. If you want to come during the summer, then try during the week.
-
Beach
-
There is a medium sized sandy beach from which you can launch but it is backed by trees, so kite surfers need to be aware. In spring and autumn you can virtually pick your spot, but be prepared to share the beach with others during the summer. To find it you simply take the A36 southwest out of Karlsruhe and follow the signs for Steinmauern where you will then see signs for the canal. There is parking nearby.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The winds here are both thermal and frontal and come at you mainly from a south westerly direction, which is also a good direction for surfing in these waters. However they are known to change to a north northeasterly direction in January, June and September which is not so good. The wind speed holds at around 6-8 knots for most of the year but be prepared for lighter winds during the summer. The water here is clean and shallow but is generally always choppy.
-
Facilities
-
There is really nothing here except parking. The nearest small town from here is Steinmauern, where there are a handful of shops, accommodation, bars and restaurants. For those of you who require a little more nightlife then the nearest city is Karlsruhe.
-
Safety
-
Be vigilant for ships and boats, as the canal still gets pretty busy. Also be on the lookout for bathers during the summer months.
