General Information
Level:6-10 Season:November 1 — July 31 -
This is a challenging big wave spot, and there aren’t many of those in the Caribbean. It is on the northern tip of Martinique and only those with a lot of experience should be out here, but as long as you’re capable enough it doesn’t matter if you bring a kite, surfboard or are windsurfing.
-
Beach
-
The beach is very small, and this means that access to the water is only limited, especially for kiters. It’s clean and unobstructed though, and you’ll never see a crowd here which almost compensates for the lack of space. As usual for Martinique, the water is warm all year round, easily into the high 20’s, and a shorty might only be required for the odd day in the middle of winter.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The trade winds blow from the northeast or east, and they do it almost year round so the season will run from November through to July. As they funnel between Martinique and Dominica, the winds accelerate and so you can reliably get speeds of 30 knots or more, though more usually you will be looking at 15 – 25 knots. The water is never flat and always offers waves, and depending on the wind and well they will start building at about 1m and hold up to over 3m – for surfers, these can be heavy and fast and the ride length can be up to about 150 m.
-
Facilities
-
The only way to get here is by car, but you can park so that there is only a short walk to the shore. The town of Grand Riviere is only small so don’t expect too much of it, but the general area is a very pleasant place to spend some time.
-
Safety
-
Those with the experience won’t have anything to worry about here, those without it will soon be battered by the waves.
