General Information
Level:8-10 Season:April 1 — November 1 -
Grossenbrode is located on the Baltic coast of northern Germany and is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers because of the great winds that come in from the Baltic. This beach is only suited to intermediate or experienced surfers since it is close to the harbor and the shipping channels. The season is mainly from April to November with off season being possible if you are fully suited and booted.

Beach
-
There is a small sandy beach with a splattering of pebbles and shells and some bigger rocks closer to the shoreline. Overall there is not much space. The beach can get quite busy in the summer months when it is probably best avoided. You get here by following the signs for Grossenbrode Faehre whre you will find a small parking lot that has a food trailer during the summer months. Park here and walk either to the left or the right of the parking lot for about 300 meters and you will come to the beach.

Wind&Waves
-
The winds are predominantly frontal westerlies with depressions and are best during fall and spring. The area works best with a north east wind, which doesn't happen too often, but when it does it can be any time of the year and often for several days in a row, when a high pressure system is above the Baltic Sea. This also brings with it some nice warm weather conditions. The water is clean and choppy with small waves of up to 1 meter breaking onto a sandbar with northerly winds, about 100 meters from the shore. Do not surf in the shipping channel which is well marked by buoys and also look out for swimmers, especially during July and August. If you go further west behind the harbour there is a flat expanse of water, where with northerly winds, the waves get blocked by a rocky mole. Be careful of fishing nets floating around here and also stay away from the bridge as there can be a strong current there.

Facilities
-
There is nothing here apart from the food trailer in the summer months. For shops, restaurants and bars you need to drive the short distance to Burg, on Fehmarn where you'll also get some great nightlife.
-
Safety
-
Avoid the shipping channel and keep your distance from the bridge. Not a spot for beginners and should only be used if everywhere else is too crowded.
