Situated some 52 kms northeast of the capital Athens lies the gorgeous bay at Halkoutsi, sometimes called Skala Oropou. It is a popular spot for surfers, wind surfers and kite surfers of all levels and abilities. The best months are from March to October although it may get busy with tourists during June, July and August. This means that there may well be surfing restrictions/zones in place during this time. If this is the case, it might be worth checking before you set off.

Halkoutsi has a medium sized beach made up of sand and small pebbles. To get here you need to head northeast from Athens following the signs for Halkoutsi. Here there is ample parking.

The main wind direction is southeast and this is also the direction that works best here. During July and August the thermal winds kick in and provide a consistent wind. During the winter months the winds become less frequent but much more gustier. The water quality is crystal clear and conditions are choppy with small to medium waves of up to 3 meters in height. The water temperature remains somewhere between 14-26 degrees throughout the year so you may want to suit up or suit down accordingly.

Parking

Accommodation facilities, food and drink places and shops are all available in Halkoutsi town and if you are in need of a night on the tiles, then Athens is only an hour away. There is also a marina at Halkoutsi which provides all the necessities that you will need when you moor here.

Safety

The spot here is pretty safe. Just be mindful of the swimmers and bathers in and around the water during the busy summer months.
