General Information
Level:0-10 Season:May 1 — August 31 -
This place is only a ¼ mile south of Fort Bragg itself, and is suitable for all experience levels. It is fairly sheltered from the wind and currents as long as you stay inside the horseshoe marked out by the headland on either side.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is a little sandy beach, and it is always quiet whether you go in the week or at weekend. You’ll be best off driving here, then walking down the stairs to the beach. Parking is in a residential neighborhood though, and there aren’t many public spots so make sure you don’t park illegally.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This works well no matter what direction the wind is blowing from, but the best swells are to the southwest when the water runs over the sandbar. It starts working at about 1m, and holds up to 2.5 or even 3m sometimes. The waves are hollow, but don’t have much power in them and are a good place to perfect riding this sort of wave. Wave length is usually pretty short, but on good days will see 100 – 150m and they break to both right and left. The water here is shallow and pretty cold all year round.
-
Facilities
-
Nearest place with any facilities is Fort Bragg, where you can find basic accommodation and some interesting sights like the Glass Beach. 10 miles to the south is Mendocino itself, which has a slightly bigger choice of activities and is popular as a vacation spot for people from the Bay Area.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the rocks that form two sides of the spot. Apart from that, you are more likely to get hurt tripping up as you go down the steps to the beach than you are while surfing.
