General Information
Level:3-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
Good for intermediate and expert kiters and windsurfers, this ocean spot sits towards the west end of the relatively sheltered Maalea Bay.
-
Beach
-
The beach is sandy and fairly hard packed, with grassy dunes behind it where you can sit and watch or set up rigs. It’s a fairly long area although not particularly wide, and while it can get busy it’s hardly crowded by the standards of the mainland USA. Temperatures are good all year round with little variation from the 25 – 30c, so you’ll only need shorts to go out here.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The winds blow mainly from the north, south or southwest here but the best directions are southeast, south or southwest. You’ll get a useable wind all year round, but it’s strongest in summer when it will be heading towards 25 knots and weakest in fall and winter when it will be around 15 knots. The water is clean and crystal clear so you’ll see the bottom and the wildlife clearly, and it tends to be fairly flat most of the time. It can get choppy if the wind is blowing strong and from the right direction, but it’s nothing that is difficult to handle.
-
Facilities
-
There is load of parking available on the dunes and scrubland behind the beach, though the roads don’t come right up to it so you’ll either have to risk driving cross country or park on the road and walk. There are public toilets and a shower here too.
-
Safety
-
This is a fairly safe spot to be out, the sheltered bay and consistent conditions mean it isn’t difficult to have a good day out here. Kiters should be aware of the trees to on the dunes behind the beach.
