General Information
Level:5-10 Season:October 1 — April 1 -
This is a fantastic big wave spot, for experienced surfers only, and it may well be the best beach break in the state.
-
Beach
-
The beach is long and consists of gorgeous, deep white sand, but it's a popular spot right on the edge of the city and it gets very, very crowded at weekends so try to come during the week if you can. As far as the water goes, you need a wetsuit here all year round – in winter it will be a cool 12 to 14° C, and in summer not much better at about 17 or 18° C.
-
Wind&Waves
-
Good wind directions here are when it comes from the west or the south-west, and the swell is good when coming from the north, north-west, west, south-west or south. It only works at the mid tide position and on a rising tide, but catch it then and you'll find that the swell starts at 1 m to 1.5 m and hold to over 5 m on the best days. It is a beach break, both right and left, and the waves are fast, powerful and consistently hollow. Length is usually up to about 150 m, but again on the best days it can reach over 200 m and maybe even 300 m.
-
Facilities
-
Lifeguards are located on the beach, and there are plenty of places along this stretch where you can buy food and drink. The city itself is very close by, and offers a good range of entertainment and places to stay.
-
Safety
-
The currents can be strong here, and of course there are frequent shark sightings so use your head. There are also quite a few locals who don't like visitors.
