Huehnegrab, Strukkamp is located south on the island of Fehmarn which is well known for its good climate and wind conditions which make it an ideal spot for surfing and sailing. Huehnegrab is popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers of all abilities and the season runs mainly from April to November, although off season is possible if you are fully booted and suited.

Beach

There is a small sandy beach which is relatively obstacle free and at the end of that there is a large grassy meadow where you can safely start and land your kite. The beach can get crowded in the summer months of July and August so either arrive very early in the morning, or avoid it like the plague. You can get here by driving to Albertsdorf, taking a left hand turn marked “Gold”. Follow that street and after about 500 meters turn left and there is a parking lot at the end of the street. It will cost you to park there. Walk for about 300 meters to the meadow and then about 200 meters to the beach.

The winds are predominantly frontal westerlies and are best from fall to spring. West here is onshore which can be good for kiting, although the best wind directions are SW and NW. The water is clean and is nearly always choppy. There is a large shallow area of about 150 x 400 meters which is ideal for beginners to practice. During the summer there is a windsurfing school and a swimming zone to the left, which you have to keep out of. The water temperature hovers between 5-20 degrees (spring to summer) and the air temperature is around 18 degrees in the summer, rising to a maximm of 30. The winters are extremely cold.

There is a surfing school with licenced instructors for beginners to more advanced levels. There are also toilet facilities at the beach. For shops, restaurants or bars you need to head into Burg where you will also find some night life during the summer.

Safety

Stay away from wind and kitesurfing beach which belongs to the school, during the summer months and also steer clear of the designated swimming zone. Look out for holiday makers on the beach during the summer.
