Travel to Olhao port on Portugal's Algarve coast and you will be able to catch a ferry to Ilha de Culatra which is one of two sand split beaches which protect the marshy lagoon, Reserva Natural da Ria Formosa which is an environmental and conservation area for birds and marine life. Llha de Farol is the western end of Ilha de Calutra and has a small population which rises with summer visitors. The spot is popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers of all abilities and the season is primarily from May to September although off season is possible.

Beach

Sand Gradual descent

The beach is large and sandy on the ocean side and narrower on the lagoon side, but there is still plenty of room for everyone. The summer months can get crowded so you are probably best to arrive early in the morning and much later in the afternoon. You can get here by catching one of the regular ferries from the port of Olhao. (There are abut 12 ferries a day during the season but this is reduced to about 4 day off season). Kitesurfing is not allowed on the crowded beaches in the summer but if you aim for the far left hand side of the beach you should find space there. If in doubt ask the locals, they are always willing to hep.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot Regular wind

The island is a fairly windy spot and sees winds from a variety of directions which all seem to work here. The water quality is clean and you get some nice waves on the ocean side. The lagoon side has some really flat and shallow water which are ideal for beginners or those wishing to practice new stunts. The summers are pleasantly warm and you can get by with wearing just a pair of shorts. However, come the winter months and you will need a wetsuit.

Facilities

Parking WC Shower

This is a popular tourist destination and so the spot is geared up for visitors. There are shower and toilet facilities on the beach as well first aid posts. In addition the beach is supervised during the season. If you are looking for a bite to eat, there are plenty of small cafes and restaurants dotted around the paths leading from the quay. If you are after supplies and accommodation then your best bet is to head back into Olhao.
